A realization...

While at the Grand Canyon...a dead body was rescued from an overlook we were at

While in the Tetons.....sixteen hikers were struck by lightning and had to be rescued off the mountain...one hiker died, one was never found

The night after we left Yellowstone.....a grizzly bear attacks three people in the middle of the night, killing one

YIKES!!! Happy to be coming home safe and sound.

The Final Post...

Woke up this morning and hit the road again. We made it to Indianapolis by lunchtime, and stopped to meet up with my cousin Corinne who goes to school out there. We just stopped for dinner near the Ohio/ West Virginia border. Gps says we'll be at Joel's parent's house at 2:30 am. The plan is to spend tomorrow down there, and finish up with the last two hours of driving home on Monday. I am so ready to get back to "normal" life, but I feel different than before I left. I have seen a glimpse of how unique and beautiful our country is, and how different the daily lives are of those who do not live on the east coast. This was one of the most action-packed months of my life, and I am tired. I feel like I need a vacation after my vacation- thank God school doesn't start until September! We have learned some things too this month, such as:
~When planning on blogging about a cross country trip, bring a laptop. I can't wait to not have to type on this cell phone keypad anymore!
~"America runs on Dunkin" is a farce. I'm sure there were some around, but I haven't seen ONE since the day we left! I am in need of a Coolada!
~The majority of the people found in and around the National Parks in summer are not actually from this nation. I am glad to see people from other countries coming to spend money in our's, but I hope a lot of Americans have the time/make the trip out to see just how cool the country is.
~Pennsylvania is not actually that big of a state....at least not compared to those you run through west of the Mississippi. It felt like Kansas stretched on for an eternity.
and finally....
~Not all air mattresses are created equal. Don't skimp and buy the Walmart brand when planning on sleeping on the ground for a month...your back will thank you.

Joel and I would like to thank everyone who took the time to read this blog this summer. Thank you for your comments and texts. We hope you have enjoyed our stories and can't wait to see all of you in person soon!

Heading Home

Well, we did not make it to the campground before dark, but it wasn't a big deal because we are now such experienced "tent setter-uppers" that we can do it in the dark! We stayed at a KOA in Interior, SD, which was right outside of the Badlands and pretty much in the middle of NOWHERE! When we pulled up to our site, we could hear a staticky noise through the car. The noise was being created by millions of cicadas. Outside, the noise was deafening. I actually did okay with it and was able to tune it out, but it drove Joel CRAZY...it sounded kind of like a really loud, non-stop, static hiss. We woke up about 4am to a crazy tstorm crashing around us. I have never seen such frequent lightning strikes in a storm, and I'm sure it was pretty, but I didn't really have the best viewing spot. Our campground boasted having "the only shade trees on the prairie," which was true. It was hard to forget the fact that we were laying under the only tall trees in miles as the lightening crashed down. We ended up sitting in the car for about an hour, before heading back to the tent as the storm moved on. We visited the Badlands National Park, which was really cool to see. It is an area where these mountains and crazy striated rock formations rise up out of the prairie floor. It looked like we were visiting another planet! We also went to see "Wall Drug," upon recommendation from the Yaden's and the thousands of highway signs advertizing it along route 90. Basically it is a gigantic drug store that takes up an entire block of a town and sells every single souvenir imaginable, plus books, clothes, homemade donuts, fudge, and ice cream, and pharmacy items. It has room upon room of stuff, it's walls are covered in a collage of old pictures and mounted animals, and is basically a giant tourist trap. The picture of me riding the jackalope is from there! It's just one of those places that you can't drive past without stopping at. After Wall Drug, we headed back to the campsite to swim. The sky was a crazy purplish color, and it DID NOT look very happy. We heard from other campers that there was a serious storm on the way and that we had a tornado watch until later that night. I was kind of excited because I thought I might actually get to see a tornado on the prairie, but also kind of nervous when the owner of the KOA told another camper about how they have a basement to go in for safety. Well, it all ended up being for nothing because the storm never came! On a different note, I got some text messages yesterday about a tragic event that happened in Yellowstone a few days ago. Apparently a grizzly bear rampaged through a busy campground in the middle of the night, attacking two people and killing a third. The attack was unprovoked and all of the campers had their food stored properly. It was just a bear that went mad...so sad and scary for those poor campers! I am glad we got out of there when we did because I probably would have been a little scared to sleep after hearing about this! As we packed up our site this morning, I couldn't help but smile, knowing that we are done camping!!! I really enjoyed it, but enough is enough! The sadness I had the other day for the trip's end has been replaced with an excitement to get home. I miss Winslow!! We have one last stop planned, visiting my cousin Corinne in Indy, and we plan on rolling in to Joel's parents early in the morning of the 1st. Probably only one more post after this one...

And Just Like That...We Are Out of Time

We may have just left, but I miss Wyoming already. It was such a beautiful, wild, and spacious state. I can't help but feel like I belong out there...ah, maybe some day! We left Yellowstone and headed toward Cody, WY on yet another picturesque highway. We pulled in at a little place called The Big Bear Motel, just to see what they had available. The motel was booked, but the owner informed us of the fact that the entire town would be booked solid within an hour or so (he was correct) and offered to rent us his last open "cowboy accomodation." After listening to his description, I figured out that he was renting us a trailer. At first I thought this was just a cute name given to the trailers, but I later realized that they are the places the actual cowboys and girls stay at while in town for the rodeo. So, for $79, Joel and I spent the night in a dilapidated single-wide trailer, up on blocks, behind the motel. I've never been in a trailer before, and I'm sure some are not terrible, but this one was pretty bad! And there wasn't just one! There were three smooshed up against one another...we literally had to walk over one trailer's hoses to get to ours. As I wrote on facebook, the whole experience just shows how low a person will go after sleeping on the ground for a few weeks! On a side note, another "small world" experience....as I filled in our address on the check-in forms, the owner asked me how Ross' Corner is doing. At first I was confused, but then he explained that he was originally from Andover, and moved out there after vacationing and falling in love with the area(I can relate). So, yet again, we meet someone from north NJ! The accomodations may have stunk, but the rodeo, on the other hand, was AWESOME!!! I absolutely loved it! They had bareback and saddle bronco riding, calf roping, barrel racing, and of course bull riding. I can remember watching bull riding on tv with my dad when I was young, but it was so much more impressive to see it in person. The bulls were so big and angry, bellowing and thrashing around in their cages. After reading about it in a roadtrip book I have, I made sure we sat in the "buzzards roost," which is the area directly behind the little pens where the cowboys get on the horses/bulls. We had a close up view and watched as the bulls kept bucking around and trying to climb out. One was going so crazy that it bashed open it's mouth and was flinging around blood and froth...kind of gross. I know some parents have a hard time watching their children play physical sports, but I truly do not understand how the parents of these boys (they were high school/college aged) can let them ride the bulls. They get stepped on every time..it is so scary!!! Anyway, if you are ever able to visit Cody (the self-proclaimed rodeo capital of the world), GO TO THE RODEO! Today we left to head toward the Badlands. Another beautiful drive! The original plans were to stop at both the Crazy Horse and Mt Rushmore monuments, but when we saw how long it was going to take us to get there, we had to cut out Crazy Horse. As it was, we just did a drive-by of Mt Rushmore because of a lack of time. We didn't even get out of the car! It was cool to see, and I'm happy I can say I've been there in person, but it was a lot smaller than pictures make it out to be. Overall, it was underwhelming, and while there are a lot of touristy things to do nearby, I can't imagine vacationing with that as a destination, as many people do. Right now we are competing in a race against time...flying across South Dakota to try to get to our campground in time to set up before the sunlight is totally gone. Badlands tomorrow!

Yes, it's a bison....big deal....keep driving

Been here a few days, and already we are "Yellowstone Snobs." I have to admit, at first we also joined the masses and pulled over for every single animal. Now, though, I have plenty of pictures of bison and elk and find these roadblocks more of a nuisance than anything else. I can also see black bears any time I want at home, so they are becoming routine. Now, if it's a grizzly or a moose on the side of the road, that is a different story!! We've done lots of sightseeing these last few days. One of my favorite things was the "Dragon's Mouth" (at least I think that is what it was called) at the mud volcano site. It was basically a large cave in a rock that continuously spewed sulfuric steam and gray waves of water. It even made a rumbling hissing noise! We went fishing again on the beautiful Lake Yellowstone, but unfortunately the only things biting were the mosquitoes, and bite they did! They were vampires! Today we went to the "Grand Canyon of Yellowstone" to see the waterfalls. Took a trail called "Uncle Tom's Trail," where I nearly keeled over. There were A LOT of steps involved! Tomorrow we are leaving Yellowstone :( and heading to Cody, WY. I bought myself a cowboy hat yesterday, which is something I have always wanted, and am very excited to wear it to the rodeo! Apparently they have one every night there in Cody. We are heading east..so even though we have a few more stops planned (Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands), you know what this means..we are starting to head home :(

I told you I had big thumbs....

Sorry, did it again. Was just going to say, if you want to know why it is colorful, ask me and I will gladly give you the science lesson! Anyway, that was it for yesterday. This morning we went in search of the showers that were supposed to be here somewhere. I won't go into details..but let's just say it had been a few days since our last shower...yuck. Anyway, come to find out, they are in the Mammoth Springs Hotel! For $3.25, we were able to go to the front desk and pay for a shower. Now here's something to keep in mind in case you ever want to go there..the reason they can do this and rent out a shower is because there is no bathroom in each hotel room. Each floor has one ladies room, one mens room, and one shower for each. If you have to pee in the middle of the night, you have to walk down the hall and pray no one else is in it. Also, there was no AC anywhere. Not my kind of hotel! We drove a few hours today down to Yellowstone Lake and found a really cool spot. We hiked on a short trail through the woods and emerged on a pristine pebble beach on the beautiful lake. We did some fishing, and Joel caught a two foot long brown trout! He was very happy, but mad that we forgot the camera. After that, we drove a few hours back to camp so that I could type this and go to bed. Favorite part of the day: watching a bison walk straight down the other lane of the road past my car...probably the worst part of the day for the endless cars backed up behind it! Goodnight!

Big thumbs lead to big problems...

Sorry, accidentally hit the publish button mid-post. Didn't even get to proofread it at all, so sorry for errors! We absolutely loved the geyser basin where Old Faithful is found. It felt like we were on another planet. Joel liked how the Earth was randomly steaming in spots, and I loved the "Morning Glory" hot spring the best. It is one of the springs with the orange and blue colors in it. I was saddened to read a sign at it that said that it's pretty colors are being affected (and getting uglier) because stupid people are throwing trash and coins into the hot springs. How sad...

There is an upside to knowing what day of the week it is...

Okay, sorry to keep you waiting for a new post! I have received a few complaints about the delay..cut me some slack folks, I'm supposed to be on vacation! Ha, just kidding...terrible service in the Tetons and since arriving in Yellowstone I've been too busy! So rafting on the Snake River was amazing! We used the Mad River Tour Company, which came highly recommended, and it was fantastic. If anyone comes out to Jackson, GO ON A SMALL BOAT WHITE WATER RAFTING TRIP WITH THEM!!! The trip lasted about three hours...an hour and a half of which was actually spent on the river. It was an eight mile trip with lots of class 2 and 3 rapids..so much fun. We took the small raft, which ran the risk of capsizing, but was more wild. Our guide was really nice and actually grew up in Morris County and has a friend that lives in Paulinskill...so again I am seeing just how small this world really is! After rafting we headed back to the Tetons. If I didn't say so before, this is my new favorite part of the country! It is just so beautiful. I mean literally, everywhere you look is gorgeous. On our way back we saw two huge bull moose! Got some great pictures! We left for Yellowstone EARLY the next morning so that we could get a campsite. On the way, we saw a grizzly bear! It was eating on the side of the road, so we pulled over way in front of it....but, I guess it really wanted to inspect a log right by the car because it just kept walking toward us. I did have the camera zoomed in all the way, but as you can see from the picture, I may have let it get a bit too close before shutting the car door and driving away! So we continued on toward the gate (where the title of this post comes into play). You see, we had no idea it was a Friday morning and had not made reservations. Subsequently, regardless of the fact that it was 7:30 am, we were told that the campground we wanted to stay in was already full. Thus began our wild rush through the park to try to get a spot. You see, in Yellowstone, campgrounds may not look far mileage-wise, but can take HOURS to get to. At one campground we were waiting in line and literally the car directly in front of ours got the last site in the place! We finally ended up getting a site (around 11:30. am) in Mammoth Springs, which is way in the NW corner, five miles from Gardiner,MT. The campground was fine, but is so far from everything that we want to see so it is a pain. After setting up we drove three hours (including road construction, and the occasional stop for a glimpse at an animal) back to Old Faithful.

The Grand Tetons!

Published with Blogger-droid v1.4.7

Apparently snow hats are weather-appropriate year round here in the Tetons...

This morning got off to a very rainy start. At it's warmest, it was about 60 degrees today and there were non-stop tstorms until about 4 or 5 pm. We really can't complain though because this was the very first rainy day (afternoon tstorms not included) since we've been gone. One thing that kind of stunk though was that the clouds were so low and thick that they covered up the "grand" Tetons. We literally did not get a glimpse of the rugged snow and glacier-capped peaks until this evening. If you have never been here...they are gigantic and we drove right next to them without knowing it...it was pretty cloudy! We drove through the town of Jackson in the middle of a downpour. I can tell it will be a cool little town to explore, but we are putting that off til tomorrow. The only stop we made was at the highly recommended Mad River Boat Tours where we booked our white water rafting trip for tomorrow. We will be rafting down the Snake River in a small 8 person raft. It is going to be awesome! After setting up our site in the rain, we ventured out to take a look at the scenery. Even though it was still cloudy, it was beautiful. I have a new favorite part of the country I guess! On our drives around we saw some deer, some elk, and a family of black bears. Let me tell you, a bear from Sussex County could have eaten the whole family for a snack! I guess this is what healthy non-garbage fed bears are supposed to look like. Speaking of bears, you better believe I asked the rangers about the grizzly situation in the campground. I was told that they haven't seen one in the campground in a month...not sure if that should make me feel better or not! I'm not afraid of grizzlys..I'm not afraid of grizzlys...This will be my mantra tonight. For now I am going to sit here bundled up around the fire, staring enviously at the neighbors with the ski hats...it's gonna be a long, cold night!

Wasted Days

Well, Zion park was very nice, but we didn't actually see much of it. We packed up our campsite and drove the hour and a half or so to Zion. When we got to the park entrance we were stopped by road construction..and there we sat...and sat...and sat. When we finally got going, we were disappointed to learn that we were on a dirt road that wound down and through some mountains via switchbacks and tunnels. The scenery was amazing...but the going was slow- like 20mph the entire way. When we finally got to the parking lots (which you have to use as only shuttlebuses are allowed to travel into the park) they were full. And so began our wasted days. We were kind of fed up with Zion so we hit the road. Traveling through Utah went by pretty quickly, especially the parts where the speed limit was 80mph! It may have been the first time in my life where I actually drove slower than I was supposed to (the good old Escape gets the shakes around 70 and with the front shocks blown, it makes for a bumpy ride)! We decided to drive a little further than planned and drove to Evanston, WY. At some point after Salt Lake City, we had to get on route 80 east. It was sad because ultimately this road takes us all the way home :( At the hotel our downward spiraling luck continued...first the towel bar fell off the wall, then the toilet overflowed bc I flushed it while the shower was running. This morning we used the laundry machines and washed our clothes! After that we went to Walmart to get an oil change for the car...we've driven well over 3000 miles so far. It took them 3 hours to change my oil!!! Guess the employees took breaks like we used to back in high school! We thought this meant we could get on the road and head to Jackson, but we were wrong again. Apparently EVERY SINGLE campground and hotel room in a 50 mile radius around Jackson is booked! We were only able to get a

Bryce Canyon National Park

Hi everyone! I'm glad to hear that so many people have been able to read our blog and hear about our trip. I hope that each of you are having as wonderful of a July as we are! Today I'm writing from an actual computer at the KOA. This is a big deal!!! Using my phone has been annoying, but has certainly strengthened my "texting" muscles. Here's something I've been meaning to mention but didn't feel like typing out on my phone: remember when I mentioned the rangers having to pull a dead body out of the Grand Canyon lookout right after we got to it. Well, a facebook friend from Salisbury saw where I was, and knew of the person who reportedly died in the canyon. She wrote to me to ask if I saw anything, which of course I did (weird!!) and sent me the link. Here it is if you are interested: http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww2.timesdispatch.com%2Fnews%2F2010%2Fjul%2F14%2Fkpob141-ar-291016%2F&h=9d980. Thanks Nicole!!!
Back to the blog...Yesterday we went to Bryce Canyon National Park which was AWESOME! It has these things called "Hoodoos," which are basically rocks that have been eroded into these weird spire shapes. Now we have done quite a bit of hiking on this trip so far, but almost all of it has been on trails marked as "easier" in the NP books. It has been hot, Joel has been sick, I didn't want to get too sweaty, the list of excuses goes on and on... In order to really get up close and personal with the Hoodoos, you had to go into the canyon..which meant you had to climb back out! Sooooo, we ventured on to the "strenuous" trails, and it was SO worth it. We took a relatively short 3 mile hike down into the canyon, walked along the bottom and climbed back out. It actually was better than I thought it would be..but it was strenuous. At one point, while looking up a steep mountain face covered in switch backs, I wondered if I would actually make it out of there! But, I took it one switch back at a time, and SURVIVED! It didn't hurt that a thunderstorm was rumbling above..kind of scaring me out of there! The temperature has been in the low 80's which is awesome! A full 35 degrees cooler than earlier in the week. Today we are heading on to Zion National Park for the day, and then driving into the night. We are going to try to make it to Salt Lake City by tonight so that tomorrow we can head to the Tetons!!!! I'm kind of sad though. As of today, we will have now gone as far west as we are going..time to head north and then east. :( At least I still am in the mode where I honestly could not tell you what the date is, what day of the week it is, and only be about 50% certain of what time zone I'm in!

Luck Be a Lady Tonight...

Before we left on our trip, I decided that following the Hoover Dam we would drive down the strip in Vegas and head out of town. Some time soon I want to go on vacation there and do the whole Vegas thing, but on this trip where I only have limited clothing/shoe choices, no jewelry, and NO MAKEUP, I thought it would be best ot just skip it. Well, Joel had other plans! He convinced me to just check on priceline for a cheap hotel...and it worked! We spent Thursday night at the Luxor casino (the pyramid themed one) for only $59! Granted Priceline messed everything up and Joel ended up spending 2 hours on the phone with them trying to fix it...but it was so worth it! Thursday night we went to a dueling piano bar at the New York, New York casino. It was a lot of fun, but I paid for it the next day! We also gambled (and lost) a whopping $20. We had so much fun that I was convinced to stay another night. In order to stay within our budget we had to switch to a cheaper (read dumpier) hotel. We stayed at the Sahara which I guess was really popular years ago. There were pictures everywhere of Elvis, the Beatles, and other celebrities from when they stayed at the hotel. It was 115 degrees both days we were there...SO HOT!!! We spent Friday at the hotel pool which was about 90 degrees and in no way refreshing. That night we did the tourist thing and hit up the strip. We saw the Treasure Island "Siren" show on the pirate boat and watched the volcano erupt outside of the Mirage. We ate dinner at Margaritaville. We tried to catch the fountain show at the Bellagio and see the Fabulous Las Vegas sign but were unable to. This morning we slept in one last time and then drove up to Bryce Canyon in Utah. Another breathtakingly beautiful drive! Tonight will be a rude awakening as we're back to camping..but we're easing into it a KOA!

Wednesday- Sedona! Thursday- Head Sweatin' at the Hoover Dam

On Wednesday we packed up and said goodbye to the Grand Canyon. Since we ended up staying on the easternmost side of the park, we left through the east exit and headed back into the Navajo Nation. We were on the same road we took to Williams and had basically just made a big circle. We headed back towards Flagstaff but this time went south to Sedona. If I could afford it, I would move there. If anyone has ever gone there and taken the scenic route in through the Cococino National Forest, you know what I am talking about. The road takes you through about ten switchbacks as you come down through the mountain covered in Ponderosa Pines. You see a mountain stream crisscrossing under the road and the giant red rock formations towering above you. It is absolutely beautiful. I saw a sign in Sedona itself advertizing two bedroom condos for sale, starting in the low $500,000's. A bit too expensive for me! We hiked for a little while in Red Rocks State Park. I kept my eyes peeled for rattlesnakes and Desert Tarantulas...both of which can be found in the park, but didn't see any. We hit the road again and set out for Kingman, AZ. This was one of the last big towns before the Hoover Dam, and we were in a rush to get there. The reason being that we were going to stay in a hotel when we got there!! We checked into what was actually a really nice Super 8, cranked the AC, took showers, and hung out trying to fix the problem with the blog program on my phone. I don't think I have ever in my life been as dirty as I was before that shower. In fact, Joel told me my legs looked like they were tanner than when we left. We joked about it just being dirt, but then l accidentally spilled some water on my leg, and come to find out it really just was dirt stuck to my sunscreen! Gross! A sign said that Kingman was in the "high desert" and I have decided that I could never live there because it was way tooooo hot. As soon as you went in the sun, it felt like your skin was roasting. When we went out to dinner at 7:30, it was still 100 degrees. When we left the hotel this morning, it was already 100 degrees, and they were forecasting it to be 115 today. Yuck! Also, Kingman was a scary town. It felt kind of like we were in the twilight zone. We went to a Denny's for breakfast this morning and we had the joy of sharing the resturant with a crew of weirdos...my favorites being the haggard meth addict wearing shorts and a bikini top (not a pretty sight), a man who looked like Hulk Hogan with a woman who looked oddly like his ex-wife Linda, and a legitimate Elvis impersonator! We were 100 miles from Vegas, but could tell we were getting closer by the minute! We headed out of Kingman and on toward the Hoover Dam. It kind of sucked getting stopped at a security checkpoint on our way in and having to unstrap and open the rooftop carrier in the heat. The dam itself was a little underwhelming for me. I thought it would be bigger, but Joel is in electrician heaven. On the short walk from the parking deck into the dam it was so hot that I instantly started getting head sweat...so embarrassing! Annie and Michael know what I'm talking about...we are a family of head sweaters...we can't help it! Now to make it worse, I may have to wear a dorky yellow hard hat for the "dam tour." It was $30 each and better be worth it. It is so awesome that there is 3G power in here so that I can write this post while waiting for our tour guide. We have relived parts from some of my favorite movies throughout the trip so far (Dumb & Dumber, Joe Dirt, Napoleon Dynamite, Pee Wee's Big Adventure) and today is certainly another example. Who goes on the Dam Tour and doesn't think of poor Clark W. Griswald. Hope I don't get separated from the tour!!!

Monday & Tuesday- Grand Canyon!!!

Well we made it to the Grand Canyon, one of the top goals for my life! I guess I can now die happy! Even though we got there by 10am, the campground we wanted to stay in was full and we ended up staying at another one inside the park 25 miles east of the Village. It ended up working out in our favor though bc our end of the canyon (Desert View) was much less crowded and therefore, more peaceful. On our half hour rides up and down the south rim we also were able to see two separate bull elks, which were GIGANTIC, and a really small mountain lion! The canyon was so amazing. Just as many had told us, it was overwhelming (in a good way) and so SO much more beautiful and enormous than pictures can ever depict. For a geology lover like me, it was heaven! Since Joel was sick, and it was SO hot, we took it easy and stayed on the rim trails. A ranger told me that it can be up to 30 degrees warmer on the canyon floor than it was on the rim. It was already well over 100 degrees on top, so I was hot enough! As I said, now that I've seen the GC, I can die happy...but I didn't really want to die(of heat stroke) just yet! Speaking of that...kind of creepy..the very first overlook we stopped at was shut down right after we got there bc the rangers had to rappell (sp?) in and "rescue" a body. The body was no longer alive. YIKES!!! On our last night, I went and watched the sun set over the canyon..perfect way to end a visit there. Overnight there was some definite "mountain lion activity" in the woods behind our tent. It was pretty scary to listen to the cat "scream" nearby knowing that they can kill humans...but I survived. It was good practice for the upcoming time in Grizzly country!

Route 66- Williams, AZ

Published with Blogger-droid v1.4.5

Sunday Night- Williams, AZ

We spent Sunday night in Williams, AZ, a town on historic route 66 and due south of the Grand Canyon. We slept at a KOA there bc it had a pool and hot tub!! We had run into a problem with our air mattress pump in Mesa Verde and had spent a few nights sleeping practically right on the ground. Needless to say, our bodies were hurting and a hot tub sounded AWESOME! Fyi, we have since solved the problem. We may look like fools, but at bed time each night, we take the mattress out of the tent to the car where we use the plug-in pump to inflate the mattress. Then we squeeze the full mattress back in through the tent entrance. The neighbors must love the show, but you do what you have to do! Anyway, we went into Williams for a nice dinner/shopping that night. The town was a total tourist trap but still fun. We even got to see a staged shoot out in the street...luckily noone pulled a "Wild West City" and used real bullets! The campground was right on the side of the highway/railroad tracks and I worried that the noise would keep me up all night. However, the only thing that ended up waking me up was Joel's mad dash over me and out of the tent to throw up in the middle of the night. Dehydration...bad food..who knows what made him sick, but today (Wednesday, I think!) he is finally feeling better!

Four Corners & Navajo Nation

First off, I apologize for the multiple empty posts. Something was seriously wrong with the blog app I was using. Found a new one, so hopefully this works better! We left Mesa Verde on Sunday and headed to the Four Corners monument where we were rooked out of our $3 entrance fee. The entire site was surrounded by a huge construction fence and we couldn't even get a picture of it! Then we headed through the Navajo Nation which I thought was one of the most beautiful parts of our trip so far. It was amazing to see how quickly and drastically the landscape changed throughout the reservation!

Mesa Verde

I believe this part of the ruins was called Spruce Tree House. We took a path down to it. The Native Americans had to climb to it using toe and finger holes carved into the cliff walls. My clumsy self wouldn't have lasted a week in that place!

The Great Sand Dunes

Just a GIANT pile of sand! If you see any little specks on the sand they are probably people hiking up.

Air mattresses stink!

Well it has been a busy and exciting few days. Since I can only post one pic per entry I will type in this one and then add the pictures separately. We spent all of Thursday at Great Sand Dunes National Park. As the name implies, it has the tallest sand dunes in North America. They are so huge but the pictures don't really show the height so well. Above is the view from one side of our campsite. The other side looked out over the dunes. We spent most of the day hiking the dunes. Although we didn't make it to the top, we came pretty close. This was hard work considering that the wind was gusting and the sand was 140 degrees hot! We could feel it through the bottoms of our hiking boots! By the time we got back the temperature had dropped into the fifties and tstorms were rolling in. It was a cold night and I ended up sleeping with a blanket over my head for warmth. Friday and Saturday were spent at Mesa Verde National Park. This place was SO cool! We took the path down to one of the cliffside villages. These were the homes of the ancestoral(?) Pueblo people. I took tons of cool pictures in case I ever teach ss some day! We spent the rest of the day hiking around and looking at some other ruins of pit houses that were built around 600 ad. It was kind of funny...out of 400 sites, the man next to us was from Oak Ridge, NJ ..small world! Best part of this place = free showers!! Again, thanks to Liz and Dave Yaden for all of the tips and suggestions. We have LOVED everything so far! Tomorrow we head toward the Grand Canyon!

One can't help but sing John Denver

**Can't figure out how to flip pics or add more than one on the phone. It was raining today and so I only ended up getting crummy pictures that simply don't do these mountains justice. Hope to get better ones tomorrow.** So, Kansas ended up being pretty darn flat in the end, and surprisingly, a lot of Colorado was too. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't plains right up to the bases of the giant mountains. Today we got off of I70 and on to a state "highway" in Colorado. Let me tell you, I will never look at where we live and think of it as being in the middle of nowhere again! Houses were interspersed across the wide open prairie in about twenty mile intervals. The county roads were not paved. I really can't imagine living like that! The weathermen were calling for t-storms with 50mph winds and hail, so we decided that tenting might not be the best idea. Tonight we are staying in a KOA cabin and honestly it is nicer than either of the hotels we have slept in thus far. Naturally, we pulled in and set up "camp" in the rain which then immediately stopped. It is beautiful here, but COLD. Low of 40 for tonight...brrrr. Have some chatty but very friendly neighbors from Texas. We are heading into the Great Sand Dunes Natl Park tomorrow and then Mesa Verde Natl park for the next few days. Cell service is getting spotty...will post when I can. Happy birthday to my baby brother and my bestie Rena!!!!

Kansas is a long state...

Blogging from the road tonight. Today was a busy day, though not very productive milage-wise so far. We spent the morning in St. Louis touring the arch and the Westward Expansion museum below it. It was actually really cool to see and we even got to ride up to the top of it in this little barrel thing! We didn't have time for the brewery...oh well. We did, however, have a "Michael Scott-like" moment involving the GPS and the Mighty Mississippi. As I was driving down the GPS-directed riverfront street, I saw in front of me some mud in the road. I thought nothing of it and was about to drive through when Joel stopped me. The freaking Mississippi River had flooded over it's banks a little and I was about to drive right into it! Why that road was open to cars, I have no idea! We later saw some other poor soul stuck in the river mud! Guess that's what you get for following the GPS. Okay, I have killed enough time with this post. Back to staring out the window at the surprisingly hilly Kansas prairie.

We made it!

After a LONG sixteen hours of driving, we made it to St Louis! We saw lots of cornfields and even two gigantic crosses on the side of the road. The one thing that we did not see any of was traffic! I know, it is hard to believe but we literally did not stop once while on the highway. Hopefully this trend continues because we still have a lot of ground to cover. Sightseeing tomorrow at the Arch and the Budweiser brewery before hitting the road again. Good night!

Stop one- take two

Sorry, still getting used to blogging via phone! Anyway, we made it here in time to watch fireworks from the driveway last night. Today was spent poolside relaxing and this afternoon I took what might be the last nice clean shower for awhile. Tonight we are going to sleep super early and we plan on waking up and leaving by 4 am. The goal for tomorrow is to make it at least as far as Indianapolis- or St. Louis if we can manage to drive further. Happy Fourth of July everyone!

Stop one- Wrinkle City

Well, we made it safely to our first stop-over at Joel's parent's house in Whiting, NJ, or as Joel affectionately calls it: Wrinkle City. The rooftop carrier survived the Parkway and we made it just in time to wa
